Justin and Sophie got married in 2005 and share three children. Throughout the years, the
couple has been very vocal about their relationship challenges. Over the years, they’ve been seen less in public together.
Justin Trudeau Divorces Wife Sophie
On Wednesday, August 2nd, the couple took to Instagram to announce their separation. In an identical post, they wrote, “Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate.”
They added, “As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build.”
Soon after the separation announcement was made, people reacted on Twitter. Some called the news shocking, while others said that this will disturb and break the kids.
Many people compared Justin with his father, Former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who had also divorced his wife when he was in office. People wrote, “following father’s footsteps.. “
Prime Minister’s Office Issues Statement
Soon after the announcement, an official statement was issued by Trudeau’s office. The
the statement said, “They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward.”
The statement continued, “They remain a close family, and Sophie and the Prime Minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving, and collaborative environment. The family will be together on vacation, beginning next week.”
Sophie works as a television and radio host in Montreal. The couple first met in 2002, and after dating for three years, finally tied the knot in 2005 in Montreal. The couple are now parents of three kids, Xavier, Ella, and Hadrien.
