‘House of The Dragon’ season one has come to an end and what a ride it has been. The season finale marks the start of the bloodiest war that the seven kingdoms have ever seen, ‘The Dance of The Dragons’. The Targaryen civil war started after Rhaenyra Targaryen was snubbed from her ascension to the Iron Throne by the other Targaryen faction known as the Greens.

Before ‘The Dance of The Dragons,’ Targaryens were at the peak of their power. They had a lot of dragons and the kingdom has been at peace for almost 70 years now. But all hell broke loose after Greens crowned Aegon II as the new King After the death of Viserys, who had named his firstborn, Rhaenyra Targaryen, as his heir.

In the coming years, many battles were fought and dragons played a crucial role in the war. Both parties have their dragons, but in this article, we will discuss the real strength of both ‘Greens’ and ‘Blacks’ in terms of Dragons.

How Many Dragons Were There During The ‘Dance Of The Dragons’?

There was a total of 17 dragons present before the Targaryen civil war pitted them against each other. Some of the well-known dragons to roam the sky in 129 AC (the year Dance of The Dragon started) were Caraxes, Syrax, Vhagar, Sunfyre, Meleys, Seasmoke, etc.

Apart from these, there were also some wild dragons present on the Dragonstone, the seat of the House Targaryen. The books mainly talk about three wild dragons namely Cannibal, Grey Ghost, and Sheepstealer. These unclaimed wild dragons were too dangerous to ride, many people tried to mount them at the peak of civil war, but failed.

How Many Dragons Does ‘Blacks’ Have In ‘House Of The Dragon’?

When it comes to dragons, ‘Blacks’ outnumber ‘Greens’ by a good margin. Currently, they have five dragon riders capable of riding to the war. Daemon Targaryen on Caraxes, Rhaenyra Targaryen on Syrax, Jace Velaryon on Vermax, Baela Targaryen on Moondancer, and the Queen that never was Rhaenys Velaryon on Meleys. Prince Lucerys Velaryon, also known as Luke, was also a dragonrider but he was killed with his dragon Arrax by Aemond and Vhagar at the start of the bloody war.

There are also those dragons who have lost their riders and are open to being claimed. Vermithor (once ridden by King Jaehaerys I Targaryen) and Seasmoke (Riden by Ser Laenor Velaryon) are such dragons and will be claimed by new riders as the war progresses. On top of this Rhaenyra Targaryen’s Syrax is a female dragon and is known for providing healthy eggs.

How Many Dragons Does ‘Greens’ Have In ‘House Of The Dragon’?

In the numbers game, Greens have fewer dragons in comparison to ‘Blacks,’ but that does not mean ‘Greens’ are weaker. Aemond Targaryen balanced the odds when he claimed the Vhagar, the largest dragon at that time. Just to put things in perspective, Vhagar is told to be twice the size of Daemon’s dragon Caraxes. So, having Vhagar has definitely put ‘Greens’ in a much better spot.

Currently, ‘Greens’ have three dragon riders, Aegon Targaryen with his dragon Sunfyre, Aemond Targaryen with Vhagar, and his sister Helaena with Dreamfyre. Apart from this, ‘Greens’ are in control of Dragopit, who is said to be home to so many unclaimed dragons. Just like ‘Blacks,’ ‘Greens’ will also increase the no. of their dragon riders and will also poach some of their opposing faction’s dragonriders.
