Aqua once sang “I am Barbie girl, In this Barbie world,” and right now, this statement stands true. In 2023, this world is certainly that of Barbie. The world has been painted pink in the most positive way. Director Greta Gerwig came with a mission and to say she has accomplished it successfully is an understatement. The movie has made the world realize many unseen things that are pushed under the rug in recent days.
The positivity of the movie truly makes people question what’s right and wrong. There is another side to the story. Right-wing politicians and other male counterparts have been constantly taking part in bashing the movie. According to them the movie is too “woke” and “feminine”. And they also are taking part in cult-like behaviors of burning their Barbie dolls.
Greta Gerwig Speaks Out On Political Right-Wing Backlash
The “Little Women” director sat down with the New York Times for an interview on the 25th of July, 2023. She was asked about her opinion of the remarks given by the Political Right Wing people. She remarked on the negativity stating that there is a certain passion in their attempt to downgrade the movie. The director continued that this movie was never intended to separate men and women. Greta proceeded to say “My hope for the movie is that it’s an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren’t necessarily serving us as either women or men,”.
Greta continued that if they showed the same passion in watching the movie, then they would certainly feel the relief that others felt.
Barbie Stuns The World
On the other side of the world, the movie is being appreciated for taking on topics that are often not talked about. Barbie and Ken are brought to the real world, away from all the plastic. And it is not an easy journey for them. Topics such as thoughts of death, the changes in a person, and how it affects the others around them are addressed. Ryan Gosling plays Ken in the movie. He seems to be sweet in the beginning. He is also happy to be by the side of Barbie. But his demeanor somehow changes by the end.
And it is in the hands of Barbie to save her land, literally. The movie is just another example of a superhero movie, from a woman’s point of view. Which is taken in a different way. Having seen only men save the world, it is difficult for certain organizations to see women in position.
