The first Latino superhero in DC Studios’ history is introduced in the 2023 film ‘Blue Beetle‘, which stars Xolo Mariduea in the title role and is directed by Angel Manuel Soto.
Who Is Blue Beetle?
Blue Beetle is noted for his clever inventions, gymnastic ability, and heroic attitude. The DC Comics superhero has been represented by several characters over the years.
He has been around in the DC Universe for nearly 80 years in several forms, and he is still a favorite among readers and many fans today.
DC Blue Beetle’s Creators
As the heroic alter ego of a police officer called Dan Garret, Blue Beetle was originally published by Fox Comics in 1939, ‘Golden Age, of comics. He was developed by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hammer. During the seasons, the hero engages with a nearby chemist to keep his supply of Vitamin 2X, which gives him his special abilities, and later Fox Comics, was shut down in the 1950s.
Later, three separate individuals from very distinct backgrounds carried the legendary mantle of the Blue Beetle over the years, each leaving their mark in a unique way in the DCU.
Dan Garrett, an archaeologist, was the first Beetle. He gained abilities from an ancient Scarab he found in a long-abandoned Egyptian tomb, which he utilized to fight crime. He was first featured in Mystery Men Comics #1 in 1939, having been developed by Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski. Later, in the 1960s, Charlton Comics brought the character from Fox Comics.
Ted Kord, a student of Dan Garrett, was created by Steve Ditko. He has no supernatural powers but he was a clever inventor, who is well versed in martial arts and replaced Dan Garrett after his death. He continued the superhero tradition using just his intellect and fists, combined with a tonne of gadgets and a razor-sharp sense of humor. In the 1980s, DC Comics bought the superhero character after Charlton Comics went bankrupt.
The newest and the third Blue Beetle is Jaime Reyes, a kid from El Paso, Texas, who formed a link with Dan Garrett’s Scarab. He was given fantastic extraterrestrial armor by the artifact, which he utilized to protect his hometown from a variety of criminals.
Since 1939, Blue Beetle has been a part of the DC Universe’s superhero community in some capacity, participating in groups like the Justice League and the Teen Titans as well as going on independent missions. This has led to the development of one of the DCU’s greatest heroic legacies.
